Great article, and I love how you’re focusing on small tangible food changes (economical and sustainable ones too!) we can achieve to create a bigger result.
Hi Sandro, I enjoy reading Antidote! I agree with you on our food system — from farm to fork — is responsible for about one-third of global greenhouse gas emissions. At CSIRO Agriculture and Food, Food Program, one of our mission is the future protein mission that is focus on plant based protein, looking at ways to extract plant based protein to encourage its usage in as alternative food ingredients that provide healthy diet for all. One of our successful achievement is the Hungry Jack's plant based burger we helped to launch few years ago.
Hi Sandro, thank you for this Antidote! What you said it is so true, food system — from farm to fork — is responsible for about one-third of global greenhouse gas emission. As I am working at CSIRO Agriculture and Food Research Unit, CSIRO Werribee site Food Innovation Centre are conducting research on future protein. Over 10 years, Future Protein will transform existing protein industries and build new ones, creating jobs in agribusiness, food processing and advanced manufacturing. This initiative was launched in 2021.
CSIRO Future Protein mission will focus on three key areas:
Plant protein for new markets – with an initial focus on plant crops the Mission will take a whole of value chain approach and support a fundamental shift from commodity to high value protein products.
Sustainable animal protein production – the Mission will protect and grow Australia’s traditional high value protein industries of livestock and aquaculture. With sustainability as a driver, we will deliver novel healthy feeds and premium protein foods for export markets.
Novel protein production systems – the Mission will develop new protein-based business recovery opportunities and build resilience in regional Australia. From microbes such as yeast through to insects that can create wealth from waste, we will transform low or no value side-streams through advanced biomanufacturing.
Sandro, your vision certainly aligns a lot with CSIRO future protein mission.
Thankyou. I really enjoy your insights and your expertise.

Agree!
